Irish Grinstead’s Passing

Irish Grinstead, one of the talented members of the R&B girl group 702, sadly passed away on September 17, 2023, at the age of 43. The news was shared by her sister and fellow 702 member, Lemisha Grinstead, through an Instagram post. “We, the family, ask for prayers and respect for our privacy as we grieve an outstanding loss to our family,” Lemisha wrote.

Before her passing, Irish had taken a medical leave due to her health problems, and the band had expressed hopes of her return after a few months of recovery.

“We ask that at this very difficult time that you please respect our privacy and continue to pray for us as Meelah and Misha continue to navigate and represent 702 for upcoming performances in 2023,” the band’s Instagram post stated.

A Look Back at 702

702 originally consisted of three sisters: Irish, Orish, and Lemisha Grinstead. The group’s journey began in 1993 when they crossed paths with singer Michael Bivins, leading to the formation of 702. Amelia Childs also joined them briefly, and they collaborated on a single titled “This Lil’ Game We Play” by Subway.

The group later expanded with the addition of Kameelah Williams and Tiffany Villarreal, replacing Amelia and Orish. Their debut album, “No Doubt,” dropped in 1996, receiving mixed reviews but achieving a ranking of 82 on the US Billboard 200 chart. This marked the start of their rise to fame, with their singles winning over the public.

In 1999, 702 released their self-titled album, which garnered a more positive response than their debut. This album boasted 14 singles and held its place on the charts for an extended period.

Changes and Challenges

Following Kameelah’s decision to pursue a solo career, the remaining members of 702 worked on the single “Pootie Tangin,” featured in the 2001 comedy film “Pootie Tang.” Unfortunately, the song failed to make a significant impact.

Upon Kameelah’s return, the group released another album titled “Star.” While it received a mixed reception, it still managed to top the Billboard chart. 702 had previously collaborated with Missy Elliott on a single called “Beep Me 911.”

In 2006, the group disbanded, with each member focusing on their solo careers. During their time together, 702 earned recognition at prestigious award shows such as the American Music Awards, BET Awards, and Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.

Where Are They Now?

Since the group’s separation, each member of 702 has followed their own path:

  • Irish Grinstead: Sadly, Irish is no longer with us, as mentioned earlier. Her passing has left a void in the music industry and in the hearts of her fans.
  • Lemisha Grinstead: Lemisha has ventured into a different career path and currently works at a wedding chapel. She continues to carry the memories of her time with 702 and her sister Irish.
  • Kameelah Williams: After the group disbanded, Kameelah embarked on a solo career. Her decision to pursue her individual musical journey led to new opportunities and artistic growth.
  • Tiffany Villarreal: Tiffany Villarreal left the group before their second album and has since maintained a relatively low public profile.

“It’s always heart-wrenching to see a beloved musical group face such challenges and changes over the years. Irish Grinstead’s passing is a significant loss to the music industry, and her memory will undoubtedly live on through her contributions to 702’s legacy. As for the surviving members, their individual pursuits showcase the diverse talents that made 702 a memorable group. While the group may have disbanded, their impact on R&B music remains undeniable.” – Music Industry Expert
