Bunton came out in unequivocal support of LGBTQ+ rights on social media by sharing a post from trans ally Jamie Lee Curtis on her Instagram story. The post’s message was clear: “I will say gay and I will protect trans kids.” It’s timely in the UK, where the trans community is under attack, and new government guidance is being drawn up by the Department of Education to forcibly out trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming youth to their parents.

Bunton and her bandmates changed the lyrics of their hit single “2 Become 1” to make it more inclusive. They changed the lyrics in a hotel while they were traveling and felt that it needed to be more inclusive. The original album version goes: “Any deal that we endeavour/ boys and girls feel good together.” In the official music video and updated single version, they sing: “Once again if we endeavour/love will bring us back together.”
Bunton shared that she feels grateful to the LGBTQ+ community for their support. She also shared that performing at London’s hottest gay bar, G-A-Y, is “so special.” When she writes or performs, it feels more open and inclusive, and there’s an energy from the crowd that is like no other.
In a time when the LGBTQ+ community is under attack, it’s important to have allies like Emma Bunton to show their support. Let’s continue to support the community and fight for their rights. As the Spice Girls once said, “Spice up your life.”
