Explosive Controversy Erupts as Dutch Broadcaster Fumes Over ‘Disproportionate’ Disqualification of Netherlands from Eurovision –
Joost Klein’s Disqualification Shakes Up Eurovision
The 68th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest was rocked by an unprecedented decision. Dutch singer Joost Klein was disqualified after qualifying for the Grand Final with his song “Europapa.” This marked the first time in Eurovision’s 68-year history that a contestant was removed after the start of the event.

Alleged Incident with Production Crew Member
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), organizers of Eurovision, stated that Klein’s disqualification stemmed from “an incident following his performance in Thursday night’s semi-final.” A female production crew member filed a complaint, which Swedish police are investigating.
The EBU said, “While the legal process takes its course, it would not be appropriate for him to continue in the contest. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour at our event and are committed to providing a safe and secure environment.”
Broadcaster Avrotros Claims Disproportionate Response
Dutch broadcaster Avrotros, however, claims Klein only made a “threatening move” towards a camerawoman but did not touch her. The broadcaster expressed shock at the “disproportionate” decision to disqualify Klein.
Avrotros stated, “Against the clearly made agreement, Joost was filmed when he had just gotten off stage and had to rush to the green room. At that moment, Joost repeatedly indicated that he did not want to be filmed. This wasn’t respected.”
The broadcaster claims it offered “several solutions” to the EBU, but Klein was still disqualified.
Threat vs. Assault: Legal Definitions
In many countries, including the UK, an assault is legally defined as “when someone physically attacks you, or threatens to attack you.” If Klein’s actions constituted a threat, it could potentially meet the legal definition of assault.
