The since-deleted Instagram post was captioned:
“DOV CHARNEY IS MY BROTHER AND ME AND MY WIFE’S BUSINESS PARTNER WHEN JAMIE SALTER AND EVERYONE ELSE WOULDN’T TAKE MY CALLS HE LET ME SLEEP AT HIS FACTORY DOV CHARNEY, JONAH HILL AND JON RAFMAN ARE 3 PEOPLE WHO INSPIRED MY APOLOGY.”
The “apology” West mentioned is assumed to be for his previous racist and antisemitic comments. He faced backlash for wearing a controversial “White Lives Matter” t-shirt at Paris Fashion Week 2022. He also posted anti-Jewish tweets, including one claiming he “can’t be antisemitic” because “Black People are actually Jew(s) also.”
West offered an apology by selling all Yeezy brand merchandise for $20 flat.
In another post, West shared a screenshot of Dov Charney’s Wikipedia page. Its caption read:
“NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON PEOPLE WHO WERE THERE FOR YOU WHEN EVERYONE ELSE HAD THEIR BACKS TURNED.”

45-year-old Dov Charney is a Canadian businessman. He founded the clothing company American Apparel in the early 1990s. The brand filed for bankruptcy in 2015 after allegations against Charney of harassment, assault, discrimination and racism.
Charney was fired from American Apparel. In 2016, he started a new brand called Los Angeles Apparel, according to his Wikipedia page. Originally from Montreal, Charney is Jewish. His products targeted young metropolitan adults.
In June 2023, Kanye West appointed Dov Charney as the new CEO of his Yeezy fashion label. West and Charney were seen shopping together in Japan’s Don Quijote stores. They were reportedly tasting food for an upcoming Yeezy event.
Canadian artist Jon Rafman designed Kanye’s new album cover
Jon Rafman is a 42-year-old Canadian artist, filmmaker and essayist. His work examines “the emotional, social, and existential impact of technology on contemporary life,” according to his Art Station profile.
Active since 2009, Rafman rose to prominence with a 2015 exhibit at the Musee d’art contemporain de Montreal. He is known for featuring images from Google Street View in his online art project “9-Eyes.” Google Earth and Second Life are other inspirations.
In 2020, Rafman faced allegations of sexual misconduct from three women. These claims were later dismissed after a year of legal issues. In 2021, Rafman released his award-winning film Punctured Sky.
On February 8, 2024, Kanye West released a music video for his upcoming album Vultures (Havoc Version). He said Jon Rafman created it using full AI imagery.
The album is believed to be an apology record. Its dystopian trailer depicts hood-wearing cultists, werewolves, killer clowns and more. West raps the lyric “How am I antisemitic?”
According to Art-Net, the album teaser debuted January 24 with Ty Dolla $ign. The album will be unveiled in three parts on February 9, March 8 and April 5.
Expert analysis on Kanye’s controversies and collaborators
Kanye West has faced ongoing backlash for offensive and prejudiced comments, especially antisemitic remarks. However, he maintains close ties with controversial figures like Dov Charney and Jon Rafman, who have also weathered accusations of misconduct.
While West claims his upcoming album is an “apology,” partnering with Charney and Rafman seems to contradict this. Their continued association raises questions about West’s sincerity in making amends. Ultimately, meaningful atonement requires consistently ethical words and actions.
