Who is Howard Bloomgarden?

Howard Bloomgarden was a college friend of Peter Kovach. They established a drug business while studying at the University of Miami, and after graduating, they expanded their network. Howard came from a wealthy family and had a magnetic personality that attracted various people.

Peter Kovach’s Drug Business

In 1992, Howard and Peter’s drug business took a portable turn as they began transporting cheap and high-quality marijuana from Mexico to the USA via California. When Hurricane Andrew struck Miami, they decided to smuggle the goods disguised as hurricane relief packages. However, after the 1993 World Trade Center attack, air transportation security increased in New York, and the authorities seized one of their shipments.

Peter moved to California to help transport the goods and avoid further risk of capture. However, a shipment containing 800 pounds of marijuana was seized in Illinois, causing Howard to suffer a considerable financial loss. He contacted Peter, angry at the financial hit and wondering if Peter was trying to sabotage the business.

The Murders of Peter Kovach and Ted Gould

Howard sought the help of Kenneth “Kenny” Fieldman, the brother of his business partner Gary Fieldman, to talk to Peter. Kenny partnered up with Ruben Hernandez, Juan Galindo, and Gus Malave, and the four kidnapped Peter and Ted, who was merely an employee at the Galleria Telecom store. Howard spoke to Peter on the phone, after which he allegedly ordered Kenny to kill Peter before disconnecting the call.

Ted

Kenny strangled Peter and Ted to death and disposed of their bodies. It was challenging to connect Howard to the murders until Bruce Wolosky shared information that he was himself almost kidnapped. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives intervened, leading to a lengthy legal procedure for Howard, who was set to be tried at the federal and California state level.

Where is Howard Bloomgarden now?

In 1996, Howard admitted to having ordered the killings of Peter Kovach and Ted Gould and took a plea deal at the federal level. He was sentenced to 33 years in prison. However, this confession did not help the authorities at the Los Angeles county level. The California state insisted on trying Howard, arguing that the conviction was only for the “travel in aid of racketeering” charge and not for murder.

Howard’s California trial was allowed to go forward, but the 1996 confession was declared inadmissible. A judge ruled that Howard’s 6th amendment rights were violated because his defense team did not offer him proper counsel. They failed to recognize the consequences of the confession in California, where the trial could lead to capital punishment.

Despite the setback, the Los Angeles county prosecutors made a good case by presenting the testimony of Ruben Hernandez and a statement by George Kuney, Susan Bloomgarden’s boyfriend. In 2014, Howard was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of kidnapping. He was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in 2016.

In October 2019, Howard’s appeal to count the Los Angeles trial as double jeopardy was rejected based on California’s
