“We, the family, ask for prayers and respect for our privacy as we grieve an outstanding loss to our family,” Lemisha wrote.
Before her passing, Irish had taken a medical leave due to her health problems, and the band had expressed hopes of her return after a few months of recovery.
“We ask that at this very difficult time that you please respect our privacy and continue to pray for us as Meelah and Misha continue to navigate and represent 702 for upcoming performances in 2023,” the band’s Instagram post stated.
A Look Back at 702
702 originally consisted of three sisters: Irish, Orish, and Lemisha Grinstead. The group’s journey began in 1993 when they crossed paths with singer Michael Bivins, leading to the formation of 702. Amelia Childs also joined them briefly, and they collaborated on a single titled “This Lil’ Game We Play” by Subway.

The group later expanded with the addition of Kameelah Williams and Tiffany Villarreal, replacing Amelia and Orish. Their debut album, “No Doubt,” dropped in 1996, receiving mixed reviews but achieving a ranking of 82 on the US Billboard 200 chart. This marked the start of their rise to fame, with their singles winning over the public.
In 1999, 702 released their self-titled album, which garnered a more positive response than their debut. This album boasted 14 singles and held its place on the charts for an extended period.
Changes and Challenges
Following Kameelah’s decision to pursue a solo career, the remaining members of 702 worked on the single “Pootie Tangin,” featured in the 2001 comedy film “Pootie Tang.” Unfortunately, the song failed to make a significant impact.
Upon Kameelah’s return, the group released another album titled “Star.” While it received a mixed reception, it still managed to top the Billboard chart. 702 had previously collaborated with Missy Elliott on a single called “Beep Me 911.”
