In an Instagram post, Jenkins expressed gratitude for the passionate fan campaign but acknowledged the harsh reality. “I can officially confirm that we’ve reached the end of the road. At least as far as this sweet show is concerned,” he wrote. “After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc it seems there is no alternate home for our crew.”
Fans’ Efforts Noticed but Ultimately Fruitless
Jenkins commended the dedicated fans whose efforts to save the show did not go unnoticed within the industry. “Thank you to all of you who sent us out with tremendous love and care. Your campaign was noticed across the industry,” he stated.
The showrunner also expressed appreciation for the positive impact the fan support had on the cast and crew during this challenging period. “But more importantly it made all of us who worked on this show better able to deal with the loss,” Jenkins added.

In his farewell message, Jenkins extended his gratitude to the devoted fan base, describing them as “lovely and earnest.” He hinted that while this chapter has closed, the story might not be over for the creative team behind “Our Flag Means Death.”
“We won’t say goodbye, because we’re not leaving,” Jenkins wrote. “We’re just taking a breather until next time we can share something together.”
Embracing the Journey and Looking Ahead
Despite the disappointment, Jenkins maintained a positive outlook, acknowledging the enduring nature of the bond formed with fans. “A love like ours can’t disappear in an instant,” he remarked, suggesting that the connection forged through the show’s journey will persist.
“Our Flag Means Death,” a heartwarming and comedic exploration of a misfit pirate crew, premiered on Max in 2022. Led by Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi, the series garnered critical acclaim and a devoted fan following. However, after its second season aired in October 2023, Max announced the show’s cancellation in January.
“The cancellation of ‘Our Flag Means Death’ is a disappointing outcome, but the outpouring of support from fans underscores the show’s cultural impact,” said entertainment analyst Emily Wilcox. “While the series may have reached its conclusion, its legacy as a groundbreaking and inclusive exploration of queer narratives in the pirate genre will endure.
