Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan Fervently Calls for a Queer Love Story on the Hit Netflix Series –
Queer Representation: A Long-Awaited Milestone
The absence of a queer love storyline in the hit Netflix period drama Bridgerton has been a subject of contention among its LGBTQ+ fan base. Despite featuring an openly gay actor, Jonathan Bailey, portraying a heterosexual character, the show has yet to explore a same-sex romantic narrative.

“I want to see more queer joy on my screens, and that was definitely a priority for me when I stepped into the showrunner role,” stated Jess Brownell, the new showrunner for Bridgerton’s upcoming third season.
Nicola Coughlan’s Excitement for LGBTQ+ Inclusion
Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington in the series, expressed her enthusiasm for the potential inclusion of a queer love story. “I think there’s so much space there for queer love stories, and I think all love stories deserve to be celebrated,” she said. “I hope in time we get a leading queer love story in this show.”
“This is a show about love in its many forms, and it’s only right for us to foreground queer love and tell queer stories,” Brownell affirmed.
Brownell remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the queer storyline, refusing to divulge whether it would involve new characters or an existing one exploring their sexuality. However, she assured fans, “I’m excited for fans to see that.”
Historical Accuracy vs. Modern Representation
While Bridgerton is set in the Regency era, Coughlan acknowledged that the show depicts “a world that has never existed,” providing ample room for queer representation. This sentiment aligns with the views of Julia Quinn, the author of the book series that inspired the Netflix hit, who previously expressed support for introducing LGBTQ+ characters into the mix.
Bridgerton’s Spin-Off: Queen Charlotte’s Queer Representation
Fans of the Bridgerton universe have already experienced a taste of queer representation in the spin-off series Queen Charlotte, which featured a gay romance between the monarch’s assistant, Brimsley, and the king’s secretary, Reynolds.
The first part of Bridgerton’s third season is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on May 16, 2024, with the second part following on June 13, 2024.
